Paniolo Academy

Learning Opportunities

The Paniolo Academy is Hawaii Youth Rodeo ‘Ohana’s (HYRO) premier program for clinics and training, dedicated to teaching and refining the skills of young riders and aspiring paniolo (cowboys and cowgirls). Designed for keiki (youth) of all ages and skill levels, the Paniolo Academy offers hands-on, expert-led workshops that cover a wide range of rodeo events, horsemanship techniques, and essential ranching skills.

Through the Paniolo Academy, HYRO creates a unique opportunity for youth to learn from experienced rodeo professionals and trainers, deepening their connection to Hawaii’s rich paniolo heritage while building confidence, discipline, and responsibility. From barrel racing and roping to cattle handling and equine care, the academy’s clinics provide a comprehensive rodeo education in a supportive, family-oriented environment.

Key features of the Paniolo Academy include:

  • Rodeo Skills Training: Participants receive expert instruction in core rodeo events such as roping, pole bending, goat tying, and more, with a focus on safety and skill development.
  • Horsemanship Clinics: Students learn essential horsemanship techniques, including horse care, riding fundamentals, and animal communication, fostering respect and a strong bond with their animals.
  • Cultural Education: The Academy emphasizes the importance of preserving and celebrating Hawaii’s paniolo traditions, teaching keiki about the cultural history of ranching in the islands and the values of aloha, kuleana (responsibility), and mālama (care for the land and animals).
  • Scholarship Opportunities: For qualifying keiki, HYRO offers rodeo scholarships to help cover the costs of participating in Paniolo Academy clinics, ensuring access to quality training regardless of financial background.

The Paniolo Academy is more than just a training program—it’s a place where keiki can learn, grow, and connect with their roots while preparing for the future of rodeo. Whether your child is new to rodeo or looking to hone their skills, the Paniolo Academy provides an exceptional opportunity to develop as a rider and paniolo.
