About Us

Hawaii Youth Rodeo Ohana (HYRO)

At Hawaii Youth Rodeo ‘Ohana (HYRO), our mission is to create meaningful opportunities that foster positive ‘ohana (family) engagement and youth development. Through our programs and events, we aim to inspire the next generation of keiki (children) to grow in a supportive, family-centered environment while embracing the cultural heritage of Hawaii.

We understand that financial barriers can limit access to opportunities, which is why HYRO is committed to providing financial support through scholarships. Our rodeo scholarship program helps youth offset the costs of attending the Paniolo Academy, traveling for events, and other related activities. With a thorough review process and clearly defined eligibility requirements, HYRO’s scholarships are available to Big Island residents and are designed to help them achieve their goals while staying connected to their roots.

At HYRO, ‘ohana is at the heart of everything we do. Our events are designed to bring families together and offer youth the chance to showcase their skills in a fun and inclusive environment. We prioritize engagement from all generations and focus on activities that are developmentally appropriate, nurturing, and culturally relevant.

Our core values—Aloha, ‘Ohana, and Hana Pono (righteous work)—guide every action we take. We are inspired by the Hawaiian guiding principles of learning from diverse perspectives, honoring our ancestors' traditions, and embracing sustainability. Through these values, we offer educational opportunities that encourage youth to build a connection with the land, support local food systems, and cultivate a sense of kuleana (responsibility) and mālama (care) for the ʻāina (land).

By blending traditional Hawaiian wisdom with modern opportunities, HYRO seeks to empower Hawaii’s youth, strengthening their ties to their families, culture, and community.
